Anointing is a symbol of being called and strengthened for an important task, which is derived from ancient times. When used in ritual the oil makes present to us God. The chrism is an oil consecrated by the Bishop used for the anointing when confirming the Candidate and is a mixture of pure olive oil and balm. The oil signifies strength, and the balm signifies the freedom from corruption and the sweetness which virtue must give to our lives.

Vestment
|
A red vestment/ robe symbolises the burning fire of God's love, signifying the Holy Spirit which is a vital part of the Sacrament of Confirmation. For this reason red is worn on Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and the tongues of fire rested upon their heads and for the Ceremony of Confirmation. |
The dove is used to symbolise peace and the Holy Spirit. When Jesus was Baptised the Holy Spirit descended upon him in the form of a dove. "and the Holy Spirit descended on him, appearing in the form of a dove. Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “You are my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with you!” (Luke 3.22)
|
On Pentecost day the Apostles were gathered in one room and the Holy Spirit came in the form of tongues of fire. The fire represents the transforming energy of the Holy Spirit's actions. It melts away the sin in our lives, allowing us to be molded into the type of people God wants us to be. The Holy Spirit kindles the fire of God's love in our hearts.

Just like wind the Holy Spirit is mysterious and powerful, we cannot see it nor can we catch or hold it. The Holy Spirit breathes new life into us with God's love in our hearts, bringing peace, calm and gentleness into our lives. The ancient Hebrew word for spirit is "ruah" meaning "breath". When we think of the breath that keeps us alive we are reminded of God's Holy Spirit within each of us. At the time of Pentecost the Apostles were gathered together and the Holy Spirit came in the form of tongues of fire and wind. The Holy Spirit brings us life- the life of the children of God.
